As it turns out, this part is pretty easy. Thanks to a bunch of people, including Marlin, who figured this out for me, using the 2RZ or 3RZ with the W56 transmission is relatively simple.
What do you need?
- Remove the bell housing from your W56
- Find a bell housing from a W59 transmission, 1995-2004 Tacoma, T100, or 4Runner with a 2.4 or 2.7L motor
- You’ll need the clutch assembly, clutch fork, throw out bearing, and all the clutch goodness from the W59.
- Turn your flywheel
- Replace your clutch. The 2RZ and 3RZ are pretty benign in stock form, but with a turbo, they’re capable for 200-400% more power than your 22RE. Don’t over clutch, or you’ll end up with a vehicle that’s pretty difficult to drive in traffic (trust me). I like the centerforce series as a basic clutch upgrade, but Marlin Crawler also has a massive selection of clutches.
These photos can help you identify. Note, the clutch forks are on opposite sides between the two transmissions, but the bell housings interchange.
